Queens, NY (May 19, 2025) – More than 2,100 undergraduate degrees were conferred to students of St. John’s University on Sunday, May 18, as graduates, faculty, parents, and guests celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2025.
More than 10,000 guests gathered on the Great Lawn of the Queens, NY, campus to celebrate the University’s 155th Undergraduate Commencement Exercise. The Class of 2025 was recognized in a ceremony that honored students from the Queens and Manhattan, NY, campuses, as well as online learners.
James McCann, Chairman of 1-800-Flowers.com, Inc., served as distinguished speaker and was conferred an honorary degree. The University also conferred honorary degrees upon distinguished alumni Lewis Rice, Jr. ’74SVC, Senior Vice President of Global Security and Trademark Protection, The Estēe Lauder Companies, Inc.; Kathleen F. Meehan ’75Ed, ’79GEd, retired Senior Deputy Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator, Department of Athletics, at St. John’s; and Msgr. James J. Kelly, Esq. ’80L, Pastor Emeritus, St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church. Sr. Margaret Mary O’Doherty O.P., Dominican Sister of Sparkill, Dominican Convent of Our Lady of the Rosary also received an honorary degree.
Born in Ozone Park, Queens, James McCann bought his first retail flower shop in the New York metropolitan area in 1976. He grew 1-800-Flowers, Inc. through new technologies and was among the first flower merchants to offer 24-hour customer service through phone and internet services. In 1994, the company became AOL’s first merchant partner of any kind. It later moved into the online gift space, acquiring Harry & David’s, Personalization Mall, the Popcorn Factory, and Shari’s Berries.
Mr. McCann is the author of two business leadership books: Stop and Sell the Roses (1998) and Talk Is (Not) Cheap: The Art of Conversation Leadership (2014); and another book with his sister Julie McCann Mulligan, A Year Full of Flowers: Fresh Ideas to Bring Flowers into Your Life Every Day (2004). He is also the Founder and Chairman of Smile Farms Inc., a nonprofit that provides meaningful work opportunities for people with disabilities; and the Chairman of Worth Media Group, which celebrates organizations and leaders who are using their influence to have a positive impact on society.
“What you believe about yourself becomes your reality,” Mr. McCann told the graduates. “If you can not imagine yourself changing the world and doing something good for your community, you will not. My challenge to you is to envision your best self and imagine it becoming your self-fulfilling prophecy.”
Mr. Rice is responsible for leading a team of security executives in charge of the protection and safety of all Estée Lauder Companies’ employees and products. He is a former Special Agent with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) who was responsible for the management of all of the DEA’s investigative, administrative, training and drug prevention programs for New York State.
Ms. Meehan retired in July 2023, ending a five-decade association with St. John's University that dated to her days as a women's basketball student-athlete in the early 1970s. She helped lead the development of Division I women's sports at St. John's and was influential in the creation and evolution of the BIG EAST Conference. Ms. Meehan was inducted into the St. John's University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991 and received the prestigious Vincentian Mission Award in 1995, given to an employee who embodies the mission of the University through purposeful and sustained service to others.
A native of Adare, Ireland, Msgr. Kelly came to the United States after graduating from the seminary in Rome, Italy. He earned his law degree from St. John’s in 1980 and served as pastor of St. Brigid’s in Brooklyn, NY until 2019. Using his law degree, he began working as a consultant to District III Immigration Services to respond to the needs of those newly arrived in the United States.
Originally from Elmhurst, Queens, Sr. Margaret Mary celebrated her 65th year in religious life in 2022. Most of that time (nearly 40 years) was spent ministering to the Native American population in Montana. Sr. Margaret Mary is a licensed drug and alcohol addiction counselor who has taught drug prevention classes at public schools in Montana.
During his welcoming remarks, University President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., urged graduates to be both thoughtful and grateful alumni of St. John’s.
“The real test of gratitude is not what you feel today, but what you do for the rest of your lives,” Fr. Shanley said. “Your giving to others of your time, talents, and treasures for their needs without an expectation of anything in return is the essence of the Catholic and Vincentian tradition to educate students who serve the serve the needy out of love and generosity.”
Student speaker Steiner Williams, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, challenged the Class of 2025 to carry St. John’s Vincentian message to the larger world.
“We arrived as individuals unsure of the future; we leave as a force, a generation ready to lead,” Steiner said. “We leave not as scholars alone, but as citizens of the world ready to lead with purpose.”
The Class of 2025 adds to the ranks of St. John’s 200,000+ living alumni.
