Research Grants Advancing Healthcare Informatics Innovation
Syed Ahmad Chan Bukhari, Ph.D., Associate Professor, has been awarded prestigious grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance artificial intelligence applications in healthcare.
NSF $550,000 Grant for AI-Driven Medical Coding Research
Leading a multidisciplinary research team, Dr. Bukhari is developing an AI platform to automate the complex and time-intensive process of medical coding and billing. This technology seeks to augment human coders by increasing precision, reducing errors, and expediting insurance reimbursements—ultimately allowing healthcare providers to focus more on patient care.
NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Grant
Dr. Bukhari received funding for the project “I-Corps: Trustworthy Medical Code Recommendations,” which integrates deep learning with knowledge graphs to enhance the accuracy and explainability of computer-assisted medical coding systems. This initiative aims to improve efficiency and reliability in healthcare documentation processes, facilitating more effective clinical and administrative workflows.
